Over the last few months the Battle Badgers have been getting together on Thursday nights (from about 4-10pm) at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/GameUniverseFranklin/">Game Universe</a> in Franklin, Wisconsin for Flames of War.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>We started off with one of the Organized Play kits from Battlefront. This was a great time, everyone loves having a place to play with their toy soldiers, and things to win. We've recently finished off the OP kit, but we're looking for something similar to put together.<br />
<br />
We generally have 3 or 4 tables set up, with games of Late War, Mid War, and Team Yankee running. We do our best to talk about who's playing what with who the day before on Facebook to ensure everyone has an opponent and a good time.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

Game Universe is a pretty fantastic place to call home when it comes to playing Flames of War. The Staff is friendly, the store is clean and spacious, and the Flames of War stock is rather impressive. If you'd care to come out and learn, or if you're already know what you're doing and would just like a new opponent or two, give us a shout.Rickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03733104498503930516noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500164640302455256.post-13534169114902341222018-08-20T15:42:00.002-07:002019-03-04T18:48:35.631-08:00Rick's RatsLittle out of date, but a post I still feel like making. The (not-so) recent release of V4 and its focus on the African campaign presented me with an opportunity to collect something new. My first thought was a pile of crusaders meant to be a part of the 4th County of London Yeomanry 'The Sharpshooters'. Unfortunately, at that time the proper decals weren't part of the kit. So I placed an order with Dom's Decals and refocused myself on a Motor Company to put something together for Adepticon. Here is that Motor Company.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc5613k-WOEHZyGcavPS7GNHjfOuTE8zXBsNba8tIqtPOINTKgkEWBtXmpEwFqdCfVVuvtbC_TbbHXLQYbfA6xaTyrs-zSQMfvchkyQWnyLETYcSyOw-5eFlGJMp4-Rm1JxLoq966lZGI/s1600/army.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc5613k-WOEHZyGcavPS7GNHjfOuTE8zXBsNba8tIqtPOINTKgkEWBtXmpEwFqdCfVVuvtbC_TbbHXLQYbfA6xaTyrs-zSQMfvchkyQWnyLETYcSyOw-5eFlGJMp4-Rm1JxLoq966lZGI/s640/army.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Now, we've already established that this wasn't my first choice, but it's really grown on me since. The list consists of an HQ, 2 Motor Platoons, a platoon of 6 pounders, a UC patrol, a mortar section, and a Vickers HMG platoon in one formation, with 25 pounders, a platoon of Grants, and a flight of Hurricanes in support. The large organic platoon count for the formation makes this a tough formation to break, though the low model count, and dealing with reserves can get troublesome. I generally end up with the hurricanes, the MGs, the UCs, the mortars, and the Grants in reserve. Though I get to switch the UC's or the MG's around from time to time as the mission demands.<br />
<br />

These are meant to be the meat of the list, however the low model count makes it an issue from time to time. When I happen to face a list with infantry these can really shine, but there doesn't tend to be many other infantry lists in the area, so these poor buggers tend to dig in and try to weather the armoured storm.<br />

I love these guys. 2 Points for a spearhead threat, and a unit that can maraud in the backfield, or just keep an opponent honest. They've even taken a forward position in scrub fields to threaten enemy artillery, and entertain some enemy tanks.<br />

Paired with the 1pt worth of the Artillery Experts command card, these guys do tons of work. I tend to use them as direct fire against tanks, or as counter battery fire, as the small size of my motor platoons can make enemy bombardments a real hazard.<br />

I don't know whether or not these guys are worth their points, but they are all sorts of exciting. Possibly my favorite unit, likely just because of my love for ww2 birds, and their models in FoW.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Future plans for this list include possibly extending into a Rifle Company so I can get at that lovely little PIAT card, possibly dropping the second organic Motor platoon, and replacing it with another set of 6 pounders, or shelving it entirely as I work on some Soviets for the upcoming Enemy at the Gates release.<br />

WITH CAKE!<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Battle Badgers went down to Roselle, IL to visit the good people at <a href="https://grognardgames.com/">Grognard Games</a> this past Saturday and to run a friendly little tournament. We were looking to make some new friends, and play a couple of games. So we brought along our toy soldiers and some cake!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMU0FuXzYngbe5v5kYSnALYBsUiRC9-pLHuYCrc-gadS3Q7psY-9E_V3NuJQXzL0cm9_BnP60E21vcPbacEssB5i2xjbbO3u3FeBx9UWUxcrXJ6XOMDFD9L6ukK0uoLvOfEBU-50ryMI4/s1600/IMG_0725.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMU0FuXzYngbe5v5kYSnALYBsUiRC9-pLHuYCrc-gadS3Q7psY-9E_V3NuJQXzL0cm9_BnP60E21vcPbacEssB5i2xjbbO3u3FeBx9UWUxcrXJ6XOMDFD9L6ukK0uoLvOfEBU-50ryMI4/s320/IMG_0725.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>It'd honestly been awhile since we'd run anything beyond a Demo Day, but this tournament allowed us an opportunity to try out some new toys and strategies. Among all of the 'new stuff' we tried out, we gave the <a href="https://flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=5560">More Missions</a> pack a try along with the Battle Plans portion of the game. I was a little nervous about having so many different missions being played in a tournament aimed at new players, but this worked incredibly well. I'm pretty sure this will be the 'go to' for us in tournies to come. Who hasn't seen two armoured forces come up against each other in a tournament in a match with mobile reserves (now Deep Reserves). The Battle Plan approach does a reasonable job of mitigating that need to be lucky enough to duck such a match, by giving players a little control towards playing the sort of game their force was designed for.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We had a great time, got done (nearly) on time, ate pizza, ate cake, played Flames of War, truly a win on all fronts. Congratulations to Mark and Owen, our first and second place finishers. As always, thanks to Todd and Owen for giving us such a great place to play. I've heard something about a V4 midwar Tanksgiving event taking place at Grognard in the near future. If you're looking to learn, or want to push your tanks around, c'mon out!<br /><br />

<br />
We're interested in finding some new blood in the Flames of War scene at Grognard, so interested in fact, that we'll let you play with our toys. If you've been considering the game, and need to borrow an army, let us know and we'll put something together for you. If you're a salty ol' veteran who'd be willing to make loan of an army, sound off.<br />
<br />
We'll be using the battleplan rules, and cards are allowed.<br />
<br />
There will be prizes, fun, and the aforementioned cake, as we help Todd celebrate 1 year at Grognard Games & Hobbies.<br />

<br />
<a href="https://tabletopminions.org/tmx/">Tabletop Minions Expo</a> (TMX) is a tabletop wargaming expo and convention in Oshkosh, WI coming up June 3-4, 2017. The focus of TMX is demonstrations, larger multiplayer experiences, and narrative play. TMX is in its first year this year, and is run by Uncle Atom from the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/tabletopminions">Tabletop Minions YouTube channel</a>, along with many other volunteers. There'll be some painting seminars, a live stream from the show, vendors, and lots of games to play!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
I can't begin to tell you how excited I was when Uncle Atom reached out to the Battle Badgers and asked for a little help running some Flames of War events at his TMX show. We met Uncle Atom back in 2014 at our <a href="http://www.battlebadgers.com/2014/06/">weekend long 70th Anniversary D-Day Event</a>. If you've never seen the great work going on at the Tabletop Minions YouTube channel, I'd suggest you take a second and familiarize yourself. This man's voice is like silk, wrapped in velvet, dipped in peanut butter (creamy, not crunchy), and he's talking about miniatures!<br />
<br />

<br />
So what are we going to be doing at TMX? Well, we'll be running V4 demos with the El Alamein set, we'll be playing Tanks, and we'll have our Pointe Du Hoc board out there for some multiplayer scenario play. We may even be handing out goodies from our friends at Battlefront.<br />
<br />
If you're looking to learn to play the game, already know and would like to help grow the Flames of War community in Oshkosh, or want to try your hand on the cliffs of Normandy, come and check us out!<br />

TMX will be held at the Gruenhagen Conference Center at UW Oshkosh, in Oshkosh Wisconsin. A Saturday badge will cost you $8, a Sunday badge will run $5, a weekend badge will run $12. Be the first person to show up at the show on Saturday after commenting on this blog post to tell us that you're going to TMX, and the Battle Badgers will buy your badge.Rickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03733104498503930516noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500164640302455256.post-77206103232860017902017-03-17T12:58:00.003-07:002017-03-17T12:58:53.875-07:00Official Adepticon Battle for the Cowl FAQ 2017.<br />

The folks from one of our favorite stores, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Adventure-Games-Hobby-447565291962307/">Adventure Games & Hobby</a>, are putting on their very own new gaming convention, Khaos-Kon and wouldn't you know it, they've asked the Battle Badgers to run a Flames of War tournament!<br />
<a name='more'></a>Now, admittedly, it's been awhile since we've done anything of the sort, but we're reinvigorated, and for <a href="http://www.battlebadgers.com/2017/01/congratulations-to-battle-badger-ken.html">good reason</a>! This is not a tournament you'll want to miss. All of us Badgers are making the trek up to Oshkosh for what is sure to be a fantastic day of gaming. Adventure Games & Hobby, Battlefront, and the Battle Badgers are all contributing to prize support.<br />
<br />
Its happening on Saturday March 4th, at the <a href="http://oshkoshwaterfronthotel.com/">Best Western Premier Waterfront Hotel and Convention Center</a>. We're shooting for 16 players worth of 3 rounds of 1515 point Late War action. 2 hour rounds, with a 10 AM start. 10$ USD will get you into the con, and another $5 will get you into the FoW Tournament. Come help us work some of this rust out, and send off V3 of Flames of War in style!<br />

<br />
<br />
Our very own Ken took down <a href="http://www.team-yankee.com/Default.aspx?tabid=867&art_id=5371">Battlefront's 'Win a Team Yankee Table'</a> competition with these gorgeous Leopard 2's. After winning the competition these deadly beauties have been terrorizing the tabletop here at the Badger Bunker.<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
It's been quite awhile since I've found the time to play a game, or update this blog, but Ken has us all hopped up on Team Yankee with his recent victory. This, compounded with the pending release of Battlefront's V4 rule set has us Battle Badgers chomping at the bit. Now, we Battle Badgers have always prided ourselves on the quality of our terrain, but this promises to be a brand new experience for us.<br />
<br />
If you're new to the hobby, or on the off chance that you're not new, but somehow don't know about the kind of work that Shawn 'TheTerrainGuy' Morris does, do yourself a favor and familiarize yourself via the myriad tutorials and showcases he's done on youtube. This guy's stuff is amazing, and in all honesty was, and remains to be, an inspiration to me and my hobbying.<br />
<br />
There's only one thing left to do at this point, hope that Ken doesn't have room for the table and it makes its way to the Badger Bunker!<br />

We had an absolute blast with this event <a href="http://www.battlebadgers.com/2015/01/wisconsin-winter-war-at-tundracon-esults.html">last year</a>! We ended up with about 14 players, and 3 wonderful rounds of Flames of War.<br />
<br />
This year we're hoping to do much of the same. Though there are a few changes. First, we'll be playing Late War this go round, and our points total will be next year's 1420 for Late War. We're confident this will shake up a bunch of lists. More details will be coming shortly, but we're hosting a sign-up sheet now. There will be no additional cost, beyond your convention admission, to play in the Wisconsin Winter War.<br />
<br />
Finally, even if you can't commit the time to play in our tourney, if you're in the area and have a love for war games, we suggest you take an hour or two to pop in and check out all of the great toys at <a href="http://tundracon.blogspot.com/">Tundra Con</a>.<br />

Ken Horton is leading the effort, and, given his love for all things Batman, he's the organizer we deserve. We're in discussion with Knight Models and Adepticon regarding details, and we'll be posting updates here.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11658884926021644139noreply@blogger.com24tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500164640302455256.post-64739352070877924552015-03-24T18:09:00.000-07:002015-03-25T07:57:46.548-07:00New Heights at Adepticon<div class="MsoNormal">

absolute monster. Seriously, this thing has its own bed in an unused bedroom at
one of the Battle Badgers’ house; all of the foam on top of the thing makes
stacking it against the wall with others a little troubling. I’m happy we did

fantastic scenario play for a crowd of people.</div>

Our adventure began nice and early Thursday morning. We
arrived just before 7 and spent the morning staking a claim on a table in the
hall just outside the main entrance, saying ‘hi’ to a couple of old friends,
and checking out the con. Thursday afternoon had us setting up Pointe du Hoc,
and our demo board, and playing a few games and answering questions for the
folks who stopped to take a look at our cliff. We also managed to hand off a
box full of door prizes to Lance from the <a href="https://www.midwestgamingclassic.com/">Midwest Gaming Classic</a> that
Battlefront had sent to him care of the Battle Badgers. By the way, if you're in the Wisconsin area and want to come take a peek or play through the Pointe du Hoc scenario, we
will be running demos at the Midwest Gaming Classic this year on Saturday April
11th (drop us a line and let us know to expect you). With our table
claimed, our truck unloaded, a few demos played, and our bellies empty,
Thursday night found us at Lou Malnati’s for some of that Chicago deep dish
everyone is always talking about. The only disappointment was the inability of
any Badger to eat more than a single slice.<o:p></o:p></div>

After dinner on Thursday, the couple of Battle Badgers who
were only able to swing one day of vacation for the weekend showed up. Their arrival was both celebrated and booed as they brought booze and models that needed to be painted for tomorrow’s
tournament. With only one thing to do,
(well…two I suppose if you count the booze), we grabbed a table in the lobby
and went to work finishing off the three armies being played in the tournament.
It’s important to note, however, that while the club helped out with Lee’s
Armored Rifles, Ken’s brush was the only one to touch his Brandenburgers, and
Ryan was similarly the sole painter of his LRDG. As both Ken and Ryan had their
eye on the weekend’s best painted trophy, I thought this was important to
mention. I can't quite recall when, but at some ungodly hour of the morning we finished up and racked out to get a bit of sleep before kicking off
Friday.<o:p></o:p></div>

Friday morning brought on a drastic need for coffee. A few
cups provided by Mark, and the Starbucks downstairs, got us all moving. We ran
demos from 8:30 in the morning until dinner around 7 in the evening. We didn't
bother to stop for lunch, and neither did the fellas playing through our
scenario. As it turned out, Jimmy John’s was willing to deliver to Pointe du
Hoc. We ran into the guys from the <a href="http://www.chicagolandgames.com/">Dice Dojo</a> and talked a bit about a series of Flames of War campaigns they are
looking to kick off in the next few weeks. We'll post more details when we get
them, but thus far we've all agreed to get down there and play a couple of
times this summer. Friday was a busy day for demos: through the course of the
day we played through our little demo game 28 times. Sometimes one of us
Badgers would have to play a side, others we'd teach from the side of the board
while two mates went at it. Each of those 28 demos ended with our players
getting a little wooden ‘I Beat a Badger’ token.<o:p></o:p></div>

We'd worked out a little
agreement with Battlefront beforehand: anyone who presented our token at the
Battlefront booth would be given a prize of some sort or another. We had no
idea what this little prize was going to be, so when our first demo players, a
younger teen and his father, came racing back to show us the plastic Sherman V
kit and paint set he'd been given we were almost as excited as he was. This
little deal ran on through most of Saturday, until supplies ran out. My opinion is a little biased, but this seemed incredibly generous
on Battlefront’s part. A set of paints and a plastic Sherman trumped anything
that the poor folks who didn't pre-register got in their Adepticon swag bags. Here’s hoping we
managed to create a couple more Flames of War players.<br />
<br />
Saturday was much like Friday, with more demos and a little more excitement in the tournament hall. Y'see, after Friday's results the Battle Badgers weren't too likely the victor. However, the fellas still had their eyes on the Best Painted trophy, and for good reason.<br />

I snapped these pictures quickly with a shaky iPhone; these images don't do either of these armies justice. However, I'm sure you'll be able to see both of them in a much better light on the Flames of War page very soon, as Ryan's LRDG did in fact get to take home the Best painted trophy, with Ken's Brandenburgers a close second. I'm still trying to talk the both of them into doing a little post here on the blog better detailing these beautiful models.<br />

After we packed up the toys on Saturday night we grabbed a bite at Big Bowl, played a few games with some new friends, checked out the swap meet, and forgot to go to bed. Sunday morning had us packing up and heading home, but before we got out the door, John from Battlefront insisted we swing past the booth. There he had us each pick out a box of new toys for our efforts over the weekend. I picked up this sweet little number.<br />

This 3 round, 1 day tournament will be taking place on Saturday May 9th. We've not solidified a cost, start time, or headcount as of yet, but we're hoping the first two will be similar to years past, and the headcount will be significantly more.<br />
The Signup Form is just below. At this point signing up is an indication of your interest, it does not guarantee you a spot. However, when things are shored up and we're ready to roll, people who have signed up here will be given precedence. So if you're even considering making it out for this one be sure to sign up!

First off, if you're in the area and have never been to Adventure Games, or haven't been since they've moved, you're missing out. What a fantastic venue! Teddy and Char were able to comfortably host all 16 of us on 8 solid tables. The truly wonderful part? We weren't in anyone else's way either, the store was full of people playing all sorts of different games, or building models. This isn't to say we were pushed to the darkened back of the store and out of the way. No, far from it in fact, we were right up front in a well lit and comfortable spot. This place is really just that sort of big and very well laid out. We're sort of spoiled when it comes to Friendly Local Game Stores here in our home of Kenosha, but to be entirely honest, I'm sort of jealous of what you Oshkosh lot have going on here.<br />

The Battle Badgers spent a little time and effort Friday night to ensure that our terrain collection and armies were properly packed and ready to go for Saturday morning. Around 7 we all piled into the two cars necessary for the toys and began the two hour drive 'up north'. We arrived at 10 as the store opened and we went to work, with some Badgers setting up tables, some registering players, and others perusing the Flames of War stock. We ended up with 3 tables supplied by the Madison crew (thanks Joe, Mike, and Mike!), a 4th from the store's collection, and tables 5, 6, 7, and 8 coming out of the Battle Badger Foot Locker.<br />

At our scheduled 11 o'clock start we had 8 good looking tables, 16 players (I ended up playing the part of ringer when one of our players called in feeling a little under the weather.), and a very varied field of armies, including (but not limited to) an Italian Squadrone Esplorante, a Hungarian Bicycle Infantry Company, a Czech Panzerkompanie, Brandeburger Commandos, an OSS group, and an LRDG patrol. I really wish I had more pictures of some of the models present here, Mark's Panzers, Chuck's Tankovy, and Ken's Gliders stand out in my memory as I'm writing this. <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Usually as we get older, the toys get more expensive, but Adventure Games and Battlefront came through in a big way again.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
That's quite a haul eh? For the second time in as many months (No, really go take a look at the prize table from the <a href="http://www.battlebadgers.com/2015/01/wisconsin-winter-war-at-tundracon-esults.html">Wisconsin Winter War</a>, I'll wait). Adventure Games and Battlefront put together a pile of prizes for our tournament. Once again, everyone who took the time to come out to Adventure Games and spend a day playing toy soldiers with us went home with a prize.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
After round 1, a short break was planned for lunch. Teddy and Char at Adventure Games had been thoughtful enough to call ahead to Toppers and arrange an awesome deal for us. Any pizza delivered to Adventure Games on the day of our tournament was 50% off! If the games, prizes, and company didn't have everyone in a good mood yet, the cheap pizza did the trick. After the poor guy from Toppers finished delivering the mountain of pizza, and the Flames of War players had invited everyone else in the store to partake in the cheesy bounty, we moved on to round 2.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Round 2 found us playing 'Hasty Attack'. My draw was Dennis, one of the Adventure Games regulars. My Schwere Panzerkompanie would be attacking his Grenadierkompanie. I went for the throat immediately as one flank had an objective with naught but an MG platoon to guard it. Turns out, that if a Tiger tank whiffs on 3 rounds of rolling, and the MG platoon is willing to continue counter-attacking time and time again, an MG platoon will do just fine for a Tiger.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih-jhv4h0PtkZDHyRsRHuqsBTWMOEmi7I7DS6TuQcsFU5PJBpoPsStU2ZK03tYM4XQ-J4qXn56zry0xH857A_Pm0KU_rLYD2MAIMRH35YeAhocYQeFg465pTSXoDcAHXUOoJqPbFOkunY/s1600/ATT_1425161834928_IMG_20150228_160240922.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih-jhv4h0PtkZDHyRsRHuqsBTWMOEmi7I7DS6TuQcsFU5PJBpoPsStU2ZK03tYM4XQ-J4qXn56zry0xH857A_Pm0KU_rLYD2MAIMRH35YeAhocYQeFg465pTSXoDcAHXUOoJqPbFOkunY/s1600/ATT_1425161834928_IMG_20150228_160240922.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My Panzergrenadiers prepare to exploit the flank of Dennis' MG Platoon, as soon the Tiger does it's job. Yes, that Tiger tank in the background. Yes, the one that's on fire...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
It would seem that despite the mission's title my attack had been a little too hasty. My panzergrenadiers had spent a turn pinned by artillery fire as they moved to flank. This kept them from being in position to at least take advantage of a pinned MG platoon. Though it turns out this didn't matter as my Tiger's assault failed to kill a single stand after 3 rounds of counter-attacks. While this particular assault left me scratching my head, my game with Dennis was wonderful. His grenadiers were able to hold out long enough for support to arrive. He ended up breaking my company on turn 6 or 7.</div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
Round 3 found us playing 'No Retreat', my draw was a young man who's results thus far had almost been as miserable as my own. Mike was our youngest player, but he had a surprising grasp on the rules of the game. After rolling a die, it was determined that his Panzerkompanie would be attacking mine. After some incredibly hot dice, my Tigers managed to out-do his Panthers at range. The two of us then spent the rest of the round observing other games.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After 3 rounds, our results looked like this:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1.Michael Jacob's Panzergrenadiers - 17</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
2.Joe Abrisz' Soviet Mixed Tankovy - 17</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
14. Michael Jacobs' Panzer - 5</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
15. Chuck Hiner's Tankovy - 3</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
16. William Wojahn's Hungarian Bicycle Infantry -3</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

With that, we handed out some prizes, exchanged some contact information, cleaned up, did a little more shopping, and headed to our favorite Oshkosh eatery, Friar Tuck's. The burgers at this joint are fantastic. One of the guys ordered himself a double bacon cheeseburger with over a full pound of beef.<br />

Shortly after this hit the table, we were placing friendly wagers on whether or not Nick could put this entire monster away. It took a little time and encouragement, but he managed the whole thing and took our money. Though, he was NOT willing to go double or nothing on the plate of fries he'd ordered with it.<br />
<br />
Want to make sure you get to take part in our next tournament? We're bringing the Cheesehead Championship to our very own Rockheads in Kenosha, Wisconsin this May. Details can be found <a href="http://www.battlebadgers.com/2015/03/the-cheesehead-championship.html">right here</a>.<br />
<br />
<b>TLDR:</b> Adventure Games is a fantastic place to play. The tournament was a blast. Friar Tuck's has really big burgers. If you're looking for a place to play Flames of War in the Oshkosh area, get a hold of Teddy and Char at Adventure Games, or Dan and Mike with the Fox River Valley Rangers, or get a hold of us at questions@battlebadgers.com and we'll point you in the right direction!</div>

<a name='more'></a>We'll be looking to play host to 16 players for 3 rounds of swiss match ups. There will not by any paint requirements for this tournament, as we definitely understand the crunch that comes when its time to prepare for a tournament like Nationals. However, we may have a surprise or two for our favorite well-painted armies.<br />
<br />
Rules and list requirements will be identical to the Nationals tournament. However, you do NOT need to be playing in Nationals in order to take part in this event, as the two are not affiliated in any official sense. If you have any additional questions, shoot an email at questions@battlebadgers.com.<br />

It seems I've been rather lax in my blogging as of late. It's been two weeks since we ran the Wisconsin Winter War at <a href="http://tundracon.blogspot.com/">Tundra Con</a> with our friends from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Adventure-Games-Hobby/447565291962307">Adventure Games</a> in Oshkosh, and I've still not managed to post a thing. Shame on me! Well, I suppose it's better late than never, so here goes.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxP1N_pHhRt9gkPrzyGLFd9PCmTNvaulptNoQJM5NXUrNnJHDHR4HkLWGAz8qi9HymxLcvpJaaN_wSZyF-hGWH2z3bqZyayoc8mKsn7sELCBbVOoGX8v7KzaPop7Njtl6RWdTd8E7ejAU/s1600/365.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxP1N_pHhRt9gkPrzyGLFd9PCmTNvaulptNoQJM5NXUrNnJHDHR4HkLWGAz8qi9HymxLcvpJaaN_wSZyF-hGWH2z3bqZyayoc8mKsn7sELCBbVOoGX8v7KzaPop7Njtl6RWdTd8E7ejAU/s1600/365.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We all got up nice and early, well maybe not 'nice' but definitely early. I'm not entirely sure why, but I snapped a picture of the clock on the stove on my way out the door. Everyone got together at Lee's place, where we piled all of the club's terrain collection, a few boards, a bunch of models, and a couple of sleepy gamers into two cars to begin the 2 and a half hour drive from Kenosha to Appleton.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The fellas at the American Legion really now how to decorate. Do you figure I can talk the wife into swapping one of our garden gnomes for one of these garden tanks?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: left;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">Registration and sign in at the con was a breeze. Then everyone sat down to go over lists and make last minute preperations while I set up tables, both prize and game, with some help from the Fox Valley Gaming Club, Adventure Games, and Paul (one of the players) who were all kind enough to bring along a table or two of terrain to help out. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

The Best Painted award went to Chuck Hiner's Soviets. I have to apologize here, because while I don't have a picture of his army... I do have a picture of a particularly catastrophic set of dice he rolled. ( No seriously Chuck, I'm sorry. Shoot me an email with a picture of those pretty Soviets and I'll put it up here.)<br />

Adam from Tabletop Minions came down to check out the Operation Overlord event, and rather than his soldiers, he brought some different toys, his camera and all the great kit that goes with it. Check it out below!</div>

<br />
Adam's<a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/tabletopminions"> Tabletop Minions</a> channel is a great source for all sorts of techniques, including painting, photography, or just plain ol' musing about the hobby. If you're looking to take better pictures of your models without dropping big bucks on a professional studio, be sure to take a look at Adam's<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWxUeYXfeI4"> light box video</a>.<br />
<br />
Thanks again for coming down to see us Adam, and thanks even more for putting the time and effort into this video! This quote might be a little too modern for the tastes of
some FoW players, unfortunately it speaks to our experiences this past weekend
very well. If you’ve not heard yet, the joint effort between Outpost Gaming and
the Battle Badgers to set a world record this past weekend was unsuccessful. We
briefly described the technicality that shot our attempt dead in a previous
post, so I’ll not bore you with details. I’ll simply say that it wasn’t for a
shortage of effort, enthusiasm, or caffeine that we failed to break the record.
We were presented with a choice, and chose to concentrate on the scenario
boards, and being good hosts, rather than the record attempt.<o:p></o:p></div>

These tables have a lot going for them. Not only are they
gorgeous, they’re easy to play on (though rolling dice on the top of Pointe Du
Hoc is not recommended), and they all live at Outpost Games in Kenosha
Wisconsin. If you want to play on these beauties call Ken at Outpost Gaming
(262-653-1170) and set up a date for your club. Further, out of his love for
the game, and the kindness of his heart, Ken has agreed to let us Battle
Badgers bring one of these tables out on our Ranger days, if you ask us for it.
So if you’d like to play through the Easy Green scenario on this board, with
our models, in your store, set up a Ranger Demo Day with the Battle Badgers

Second, let’s talk about the turnout. We had over 30 people
sign up for the event. However, most everyone had signed up for Friday Night,
Saturday, or Sunday. We’d sort of expected to have the place to ourselves
Thursday Night, and most of Friday. Boy we’re we wrong. Outpost Gaming had 16
people in it to kick off the event Thursday at midnight, including one fella
who drove 4 hours from Indianapolis to play. Throughout the entire weekend we
saw 27 different players, and something better than 200 visitors who popped in
just to see what we were doing.<o:p></o:p></div>

Third, the campaign, we’d really like to thank Jokull from
Einherjar for the effort he put into the Firestorm Normandy campaign, and
keeping us in the loop whilst developing this work. Unfortunately, the world
record attempt robbed the campaign itself from some of the attention it really
deserved. However the Firestorm Campaign did a great job of providing a
backdrop of continuity across all of the weekend’s games. Things were looking
great for the Allies as of Thursday night as we played a few hours of Sieze and
Hold missions to represent the Airborne operations prior to the beach landings
themselves. Unfortunately, that was pretty much where the Allied success ended.
The German defenses held strong on every scenario beach, save for Utah. There
was some additional success around the Utah landing, lending an air of
possibility to the Allied Invasion, but at the end of the day the Germans won
the campaign rather handily</div>

We were able to make a couple of new Flames of War players
this weekend, and raise a couple of bucks for a good cause. Battlefront provided some prize support that
we raffled off, along with a few donations from Outpost Gaming, the Battle
Badgers, and even a brand new Konigstiger donated by one of our guests, Chris
Novak from Indianapolis. Battlefront also sent us a couple of old briefings to
give away as door prizes to the folks who stopped in just to see what we were
up to. It would’ve been awesome to set a world record this past weekend,
however I’m very happy with the outcome of this event. Besides, we learned a

What the %&!# were we thinking?There will be no world record for Outpost Games and the Battle Badgers this year. So, what happened? Did the Badgers just wimp out? Nope, in fact we stayed here past Midnight last night teaching Tim and Nick from Great Lakes how to play the game (Tim and Nick left with a free copy of the rulebook, two stugs, and three shermans courtesy of Battlefront). When we first decided to try to set a record with this event, we were presented with a decision, we could either shell out 7 grand to have an official from Guiness on hand, or we could do the record keeping ourselves with some strict rules about what was required. Unfortunately, we weren't able to sell enough cupcakes (I'm an awful baker) to get to that $7,000 dollar mark so we decided to try to do it ourselves....whoops.<br />
<br />
To describe these rules briefly, we had to have a 'steward' on hand at all times. This steward is responsible for officiating the event, further all record keeping is the steward's responsibility. We also needed to have two witnesses present at all times. Witnesses had to 'work' for 4 hour blocks, and no further. Meaning that if John was one of the two witnesses between 4 and 8 PM, John can NOT be a witness for the 8 to 12 block. Further, the witnesses must be of majority age. Finally, a steward could not be a witness.<br />
<br />
The witness side of things is what killed our attempt. We had 7 players (not including our 2 stewards and 3 record breakers) planning to spend ALL NIGHT with us last night. Unfortunately, 4 of them were under the age of 18, leaving us 3 people who could act as witnesses. This wouldn't work with the rules we had to keep, as we needed at least 4 to be able to rotate back and forth. Knowing this was the case, we chose to pull the plug on the record attempt to allow everyone to get some sleep and provide a better event for all of our guests the next morning.<br />
<br />
So that's the bad news. The good news is that we've got a bunch of people playing Flames of War at Outpost right now. We are still running the campaign, and the charity raffle.<br />
<br />
We're certainly a little disappointed, but this weekend was really about playing and teaching the game anyhow.Rickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03733104498503930516noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500164640302455256.post-75719455688544946122014-06-06T18:49:00.001-07:002014-06-06T22:19:26.208-07:00Mixed results - NEWS ALERT<p dir="ltr">An incredibly exciting day today at Outpost Gaming: incredulously successful airborne missions, followed by horrendous beatings by the Germans on the beaches.</p>
<p dir="ltr">At the end of the attempted beach landings, the Allies only held Utah beach, after some impressive heroism from the US 4th Infantry Division, leaving the Allies in a tenuous position.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Perhaps worse, due to some scheduling problems around the middle of the day, we had to stop our attempt for the Guinness record - we just ran out of people to act as official witnesses. It was probably for the best though, as we were running pretty ragged. This means we'll get a good night's rest tonight, then be back at the shop fresh in the morning to focus on running a great event, rather than the stringent record-attempt rules.</p>
<p dir="ltr">To repeat: the venue will be <b>CLOSED</b><b> </b>on Friday night, and will most likely close late on Saturday evening as well, before the final push Sunday. If this puts a serious wrench in your plans, please contact us ASAP, and we can try to make arrangements.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Thanks to everyone who has shown up so far; we've had a great time, even with the fatigue.</p>
<p dir="ltr">We'll see you as the invasion continues!</p>
